CHURCH AND SOCIETY

The Reformed tradition, and the Transformation of Culture

By D.G Hart J. Gresham Machen.

Machen was the most influential Evangelical of the twentieh century. He was an Acadenic scholar and his work is The Virgin Birth of Christ.in this an important part in church politics .Dr Hart is librarian at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. He made a great contribution to the relationship between the church and the culture. During the 1937 month of January 1, he suffered from pneumonia at the age of 55. He suffered from pneumonia for about 14 years. In 1923 Christianity and liberalism were published. Machen was also a brilliant New Testament scholar whom he also taught at Princeton Seminary from 1906 to 1929. his letter became conservative protestatism. There were controversies but by 1929 Westminster Theological Seminary was founded and Machen became Conservative in the country of the Northern Presbyterian Church and it all started with a long debate the Orthodox Presbyterian Church was established and this in turn was questioned by some conservatives. decisions that led to the formation of a denomination. Machen's influence provided training for young people to minister in school. but his departure was unexpected.

Over time Machen had rivals. In 1940 an orthodox successor emerged who also led Westminster and head of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Machen's defense had significance in the relationship between Christianity and Culture. . For some zealots like Cornelius Van Til, John Murray and Ned Stonehouse Machen it was a departure from the mailine church to form a new denomination in their teaching efforts. But for Neo Evangelical leaders like Harold Ockenga , Carl Henry and others is that Machen served as a model for the restoration of Christian civilization in America. Because of this there was a different agenda regarding the Doctrine of the church. But the leader of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church had hesitation to join in interdenominational programs that interrupt their belief. the Neo-Evangelicals had those who acquired the doctrines and truths and that they replaced with doctrinal matters and expanded it because of the gospel.many of them examined the Acts Christiano and to discover which ones are true.but the Archetics of neo evangelical movement took a more pragmatic and min imized other concern.

Christianity has been involved in cultural transformation as well as in the proclamation of the Gospel. The Gospel view is also the preparation of the soul after death. The other view is that all of God's creations are all Good and Christians cannot forsake. the secular with regard to political.education, art which is the witness to the gospel. The idea of the Protestant believers teaches according to the law that what is in society and what is in the church are both meaningful in the sight of God. Because he is also Lord of all aspects. Because the world has fallen into sin mankind needs salvation. .the dedication in all areas of life to the glory of God is an additional process for Christians.conservative Presbyterians and refonned denominations are late in striving cultural life due to being hindered by some due to doctrines.there are trends intellectually and culturally such as getting media coverage and the president's visit they did not agree.so the neo evangelical they saw active for fifty years. There are things that distinguish Refonned's view is the transformation of Culture. H Richard is a translator who can blame him for the ironic cycle. It may be a dispute between the difference between tradition and Lutheran and the refonned opposition to Christianity and culture. it says here that there will be two kingdoms that will see Christ and Culture as part of the second coming of Christ. the refonned tradition aims at changing culture and strives to preserve human culture and society. When Calvin made a distinction between the spiritual and the temporal, many went on strike because there was a church that was opposed to a political or social order.

For machen it was a shift of culture by refonned in teaching the ministry of the church while valuing modern culture.but all this was to find out Machen's attitude towards the church and associate it with suffering.the issues were not with Machen's followers but to his idea.all not to show where his idea came from where the conservative Presbyterian and Evangelical.Machen he is more very sensitive to the particular problems of cultural diversity and religious freedom.machen views to strike some of another form. of fundamental separatism but closer reading may still realy beneficial contemporary of discussion about transformation of culture.

The consecration of culture.Machen was well- positioned to apply the cultural insight of the reformed faith. He also appeal to many of the fundamental student who studied with himat Princeton Seminary. He was always respectful of his foes erudition and breath of learning.  Christianity and liberalism  is different.  Machen explained  that the word unchristian departed from the traditional Christian understading of God..Machen understanding common grace allowed him to seethat the regenerate and unregenerate  were capable of valuable insights and  worthy . Machen noted were not chritsian but still deserved respect from christian because they towered.if Christian greater than because of the virtue of God’s Saving Grace.and Machen understand of Christianity’s relationship to culture went beyond the surface of polite  manners and privileged  social standing.christian involvement in cultural and intellectual life was clearly different from the pietistic and revivalistic other worldliness of many fundamental.

The Separateness of the Church.according Machen the culture and the church have differences, because the church is about witnessing to Chisto.christians are not just religious experience or inner feeling but Christianity is a life founded on a doctrine .a life that has been made not to participate in study and not to personally contact for the good news and this good news is Jesus Christ who died for the sins of us all.there is a sense that the Christian faith is due to gospel and the Bible are not finished in history according to Machen. he experienced much that the trial ended but he said he opposed the view of Christianity.

Church Against Culture? When Machen died his colleague continued to value denominational decisions and activities.1942 had the implication of speaking to the non-Presbyterian.year 1940 the neo evangelical thought to combine conservation protests from various denomination for advocating the Evang issue to restore the voices of Christians in America.on the other hand consists of Calvinist and Arminian of vidastions and denominations some who worried about not crossing their struggle long had Christians

Church and Society.

Reflection

The church and Society have three parts according to D, H.Hart in Christian society as follows. First is cultural, second is political and the third is economic.

These three are really very important in the society interacting with it in a country or town if developed and recognize what its culture is. Especially in the Philippines, there are many cultures, rich economies and political differences.

The question is how especially in our country how does society value churches?

Christians should have a deep appreciation of the church as well as how they value society. Which should be central in a Christian's life? The society or the church?

By the 1940s there were already various debates working with fellow Christian scholars.to restore Christian civilization to America. There are those who argue that the church should reach out and some things of cultural doctrine using. For me it is possible to reach the people of Evangelization to talk when the time comes when they face God they have nothing to justify. In the society of the Philippines the country has many different religions and from a child heard the word of God .one thing people must do is live the words of God. Because economic oppression is the lack of fear of God the leaders. if the leaders of our society already have the fear of God especially the development of our country. The purpose of the church is for many people to know Christ and to lead people into sin. As the reformed tradition seeks to lead or change the culture and society and establish the kingdom of God. Like Machen there is a high view of the minister. Should be to the leaders of politicians and even to the leaders of the church. That they serve not for money but for the glory of Christ. In our time there is still no stopping the debate about doctrine, it is sad to think that there are leaders who teach society that there is no hell  and everyone is safe. This is something that will harm society when this is the teaching of the church.

It is mentioned here in the book of reformed tradition and transformation of culture that liberalisms have left the custom of recognizing God and the Bible and sin which does not mean that they are bad people. For me it is if there are people who do not believe in God is due to lack of faith in the word of God and some of them have been blinded by the knowledge of the world. They are also like us who still need God's grace. Relationship between church and culture. In 1942 there was a disagreement between the OPC and NAE that modernism was accepted by other Christians and liberalism was embraced by another group. But many embraced Presbyteriasm and Calvinism. But what is seen here is a discipline for cultural change. hart is thinking of ways to fix everything for the better .so hart told Machen he made a correction for the popularity of the culture.to achieve that is politics. The responsibility of the church in our time. According to machen that the battle is not in the flesh but in the spiritual battle.be responsible at all times especially we Christians in our time today. One thing is that Machen said that human life is not in the length of history. But how man is justified from sin. God is alive because the God who speaks is Life. The family, school and college and teaching play a really big role. So a Christian should have a wide appreciation for education not to be proud but to teach others the importance of education. to Christian children that if they have the ability to go to Christian schools, they should strive to graduate there. Because of that school, they will grow even more in appreciation for the church.

By the end of this book I fully understood is to appreciate what deserves what is good especially in today's generation. There are many disputes in different perspectives but one thing is true that God is alive and his word is just the right pattern in the life of Christian. All is wanted is pawing good how to appreciate the society and faith of the church but to our reader is to accept what is good and always read the word of God.
